Portrait of a patriot
Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March
17, 1920 at
Tungipara in the then Faridpur district. Despite the fact that he was an
extraordinary political leader who had spent more than twelve years in jail for
articulating the legitimate grievances of his people against the then Pakistani
ruling elite, he became a victim of a brutal massacre on August
15, 1975. ....Details |

World
economy needs balancing, but how? Not
so long ago, it looked as if the US was getting over its propensity to run
unsustainable trade deficits and the world economy could move to
"rebalancing" – meaning that
its growth did not depend on unsustainable debt growth in any major member.
After a promising start in rebalancing, the world once again faces the danger
of keeling over because of the debt crisis in Europe. ....Details |

Through
monetary policy the central bank of a country controls supply, availability and
cost of money so as to achieve optimum economic growth while maintaining price
stability. Monetary policy is relatively flexible: immediate changes can be
made in response to shocks, as opposed to fiscal policy, which takes longer
time to manage and implement. ....Details |

For
all its faults, few can question the latest Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) of
the Bangladesh Bank (BB) for lack of consultations. BB must be credited with
establishing at least two fine traditions worth upholding. First, these
bi-annual MPS have been announced on time with unfailing regularity since its
inception some three years ago. It clearly adds to the atmosphere of policy
certainty, a plus for businesses and investors. ....Details |

Efforts
are being made to minimise the suffering of electricity consumers through quick
increase in generating capacity both in private and in public sector. This is a
laudable effort. Investments and continuation of essential industrial
production cannot be expected if adequate electricity supply at a reasonable
price cannot be ensured. The country is investing a huge amount of resources to
that end. ....Details |

The
government has brought about a massive change in income tax measures in fiscal
2010-11 for merely raising tax collection. Among such changes, the major ones
are aimed at collecting more advance tax, the target of which is more than 50%
of the budgeted Tk 210 billion as income tax. A total of 39 major sectors have
been selected for advance tax collection and from contractors' and
sub-contractors' bill. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) targeted Tk 31.74
billion tax at source where the rate of deduction has been raised by 25% in
this sector. ....Details |

grains generally refer to rice, wheat, oat, rye, barley, corn and millet. But
in the context of Bangladesh, food grains
normally mean rice, which alone provides 93.69% of food grain intake. Next to
rice, though not comparable with rice, comes wheat, which provides 2.57% of
food grain intake. The remaining 3.74% come from other food grains mentioned
above (ref. HIES-2005 of BBS). ....Details |
